Fiat’s 2012 Nuova Panda to Fight for City-Car

Replacing a car with a 31-year long history is never an easy task. Especially if it has become one of Fiat's most successful city cars offering ample interior space and practicality for its size.

The first generation of the model introduced in 1980, was the first city car to offer a diesel engine (1986), four-wheel drive (1983) and one of the first electric variants (the Elettra in 1990), while the second generation Panda that was launched in 2003, managed to keep Fiat afloat and formed the base for the successful 500.

Now it's time for Fiat to lift the wraps on the third iteration of the Panda that will make its world premiere in Frankfurt. The “Nuova” (that’s Italian for new) Panda has grown in dimensions compared to its predecessor measuring 3,650 mm long (vs 3,538), 1,640 mm wide (vs 1,578) and 1,550 mm tall (vs 1,450).

Offered exclusively as a five-door model, the new Panda promises to offers more room for both passengers and their luggage.

On the outside, the new Panda looks like a much more modern and rounder version of the second-generation model infused with some touches from the 500 while at the same time, retaining some of the old model’s signature styling traits such as the large glass area and the vertically stacked rear lights.

The same stands true for the interior design, which is also instantly recognizable as belonging to a Panda thanks to the layout of the center console and the high-placed gear lever. The cubby hole in the passenger side of the original Panda makes a return, materials are of improved quality and practicality has been enhanced by the sliding (and of course, split and folding) rear seat as well as the folding passenger’s seat. Safety is taken care of four airbags and ABS as standard.

Under the skin, the new Panda may retain the McPherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension of the older model, but in the powertrain department there are many changes.

The Italian city car will launch with no less than six engines. The gasoline range includes two TwinAir 0.9-liter two-cylinder units in naturally aspirated and turbocharged formats with 65HP and 85HP respectively, and a 4-cylinder, 1.2-liter 69HP engine, while there's also 1.3-liter Multijet diesel with auto stop-start technology.

The other two engines are a petrol/methane version of the 0.9 liter turbocharged unit and a petrol/LPG version of the 1.2.

All powerplants will be available at launch with a five-speed manual gearbox, with a semiautomatic “Dualogic” becoming an option later. In 2012, an obstacle detection system that operates below 30 km/h (19mph) and can automatically apply the brakes if the driver doesn’t intervene will also become available.

The Nuova Panda will be available in three trim levels, 10 body colors and four different interiors, resulting in 600 possible different combinations. Production will commence in November at Fiat’s Naples factory.

Fiat 500 by Gucci Series Coming to NY Fashion Week

A stylish car associated with one of the most exclusive names in fashion needs the appropriate introduction. And that’s why Fiat chose to launch the 500 by Gucci edition of its subcompact car in the US at next month’s New York fashion week.

The special edition, which has been available in Europe since July, is mechanically identical to the run-of-the-mill US edition of the 500, but Gucci's creative director Frida Giannini customized its styling, adding the brand’s famous red and green pattern, a two-tone leather interior as well as its double-G logo in places like the wheels and the gearlever.

The Fiat 500 by Gucci will be available both as a hatchback and as a convertible, in black or white finishes.

Expect pricing of both models to be equivalent to Gucci’s other products. Just to get an idea, in Europe the hatchback starts from €17,000 (US$24,200 and the 500C convertible from €20,000 (US$28,800).

And if you intend to place your order but don’t have a matching bag, you still have time to visit www.gucci.com and get it…

Fiat May Miss 500’s North America Sales Target in 2011

Fiat’s 500 sales in North America will likely fall short of the initial target of 50,000 units in 2011, because of the delays in opening new stores. Currently, the brand has opened 100 out of the 130 stores planned for the US this year.

The Italian company chose to open new stores instead of using the existing Chrysler dealer network, in order to differentiate its niche product. However, the original plan, which called for most delaers to be operational by February, failed since at that time only about a dozen were ready.

This, according to Laura Soave, head of the Fiat brand in North America, was due to the dealers waiting longer than anticipated for the government permits. Soave admits that “We lost the whole first quarter”.

"We have coverage now, so it is time for us to turn this up. We ‘ve already activated the smaller guerilla-type marketing, but there are bigger events that will get us bigger awareness," Soave added.

Since the 500 went on sale in North America it has proven to be a hit: 7,982 units were sold in the US so far, with 3,038 delivered in July alone. Canada is also a successful market for the stylish Italian city car, with 3,064 sales from March until July.

Fiat intends to make up for the lost time with no less than 500 (!) marketing efforts, ranging from placing 36 cars in Times Square and inviting people to watch movies in the jumbotron, to launching a new iPad application.

Rumors: Fiat Plans with New Models Including Crossover

Banking on the success of its new 500 hatch, Fiat plans to enhance the small car's range with a variety of new models within the next two years according to Autoweek.

The first new addition to arrive in North America is the Abarth, the sportiest version of Fiat’s city car that's already available in Europe. The Abarth 500 is powered by a highly-tuned 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder delivering 180HP and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque.

The diminutive (3,657 mm / 144-in. length) hatchback sports an aggressive bodykit, stiffer suspension, an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, and 17-inch alloy OZ wheels.

The second addition to the range is a pure electric 500 that will be available next year. Fiat has teased the new model with the 500 BEV Concept at the Detroit Motor Show in 2010, but didn’t reveal any specific details about the powertrain.

The EV 500 is being developed mainly by Chrysler at its Technical Center in Auburn Hills, which has undertaken all work for electric vehicles in the Fiat Chrysler alliance. The 500 EV will be powered by a lithium-ion battery jointly developed by Samsung and Bosch.

During the presentation of the 500 BEV Concept, the company's CEO Sergio Marchionne had revealed that it's price would be double that of the standard 500 at around $32,000, with the battery pack accounting for half of that price.

Marchionne said it the pure electric model is not overpriced since Fiat will lose almost $10,000 for every 500 EV that it sells. However, it will produce the car in limited numbers in order to boost its eco-friendly image as well as lower its corporate average CO2 emissions.

A fifth, and rather unexpected, addition to the range which at the time will already include a 3-door hatch, the 500C convertible, the sporty Abarth and the zero-emissions EV, will be a five-door crossover model.

Said to be launched in 2013, it will be based on a larger platform, but will still bear the 500 moniker. The high-riding 500 will most likely debut as a concept, at next year’s Geneva Motor Show in March with the production model to be built at Fiat’s new plant in Serbia.
